To perform a directory search:

Remain in alphanumeric mode: Press the keypad keys to enter the desired
characters. (See the chart below.) The number of times a key is pressed
determines which character is entered. For example, 77776444844 would
enter SMITH. You need a FORWARD key to enter adjoining characters that
are located under the same key or to leave spaces. For adjoining characters,
press the FORWARD key once to advance to the next character. For exam-
ple, 5666FWD66337777 would enter JONES. (Note: The letters correspond
to the letters printed on keypad keys 1-9.) Press BACKSPACE to back-
space.
