follow Rest

the follow rest shown in figure 44 is mounted on
the front of the saddle and follows the movement
of the tool along the length of the workpiece. the
follow rest is used on long, slender parts to pre-
vent flexing of the workpiece from the pressure of
the cutting tool. the follow rest requires only two
fingers as the cutting tool acts as the third.

the follow rest is installed/removed with two cap
screws at the base. the fingers are set against
the workpiece in the same manner as those of the
steady rest. Always lubricate the finger tips with
an anti-seize grease during operation.

the cross slide sits directly on the saddle and
moves perpendicular to the spindle center line
when the handwheel is rotated (see figure 45).

the cross slide graduated dial is a "direct read"
dial. the actual distance the cross slide moves is
of the dial reading, but removes the amount the

dial indicates from the diameter of the workpiece.
