Troubleshooting charts
The following tables list problem symptoms and suggested solutions. See the
Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM xSeries
Documentation CD for more detailed troubleshooting charts. If you cannot find the
problem in these charts, run the diagnostic programs. If you have run the diagnostic
programs, or if running the tests does not reveal the problem, call for service.
CD-ROM drive problems
Symptom
The CD-ROM drive is not
recognized.
Diskette drive problems
Symptom
The diskette drive activity LED
stays lit, or the server bypasses
the diskette drive.
General problems
Symptom
A cover lock is broken, an LED
is not working, or a similar
problem has occurred.
Hard disk drive problems
Symptom
Not all drives are recognized by
the hard disk drive diagnostic
test (the Fixed Disk test).
The server stops responding
during the hard disk drive
diagnostic test.
The hard disk drives are not
detected while loading the
operating system.

Suggested action
Make sure that:
v The IDE channel to which the CD-ROM drive is attached (primary or secondary)
is enabled in the Configuration/Setup Utility program. If the server has a single
IDE channel, only the primary channel can be used.
v All cables and jumpers are installed correctly.
v The correct device driver is installed for the CD-ROM drive.
Suggested action
If there is a diskette in the drive, make sure that:
v The diskette drive cables are correctly and securely connected.
v The diskette drive is enabled in the Configuration/Setup Utility program.
v The diskette is good and not damaged. (Try another diskette if you have one.)
v The diskette contains the necessary files to start the server.
v Your software program is working properly.
If the problem remains, call for service.
Suggested action
Call for service.
Suggested action
1. Remove the first drive that is not recognized and run the hard disk drive
diagnostic test again.
2. If the remaining drives are recognized, replace the drive that you removed with
a new one.
1. Remove the hard disk drive that was being tested when the server stopped
responding and try the diagnostic test again.
2. If the hard disk drive diagnostic test runs successfully, replace the drive that
you removed with a new one.
1. Make sure that the SCSI backplane is enabled in the Configuration/Setup Utility
program.
