Troubleshooting charts

You can use the troubleshooting charts in this section to find solutions to problems
that have definite symptoms.
Attention:
tables, make sure that your system has the latest level of SAL/EFI code installed.
See the Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide on the IBM
xSeries Documentation CD for more detailed information about testing the server. If
you have run the diagnostic tests or if running the tests does not reveal the
problem, call for service.
If you have just added new software or a new option and your server is not
working, complete the following steps before using the troubleshooting charts:
1. Remove the software or device that you just added.
2. Run the diagnostic tests to determine whether your server is running correctly.
3. Reinstall the new software or new device.

If diagnostic error messages appear that are not listed in the following

Verify that the device is inserted in the right-side bay and is seated correctly in the
bay.
If the problem remains, call for service.
Call for service.
Verify that:
1. All cables and cords are connected securely to the rear of the server and
attached options.
2. When the server is turned on, air is flowing from the rear of the server at the
fan grille. If there is no air flow, the fan is not working. This causes the server
to overheat and shut down.
3. Ensure that the SCSI bus and devices are configured correctly and that the last
external device in each SCSI chain is terminated correctly.
4. Check the system-error LED on the front of the server. See "Light Path
Diagnostics feature overview" on page 38 for more information.
If the items above are correct, call for service.
1. Make sure that the keyboard USB cable is properly connected to the server.
2. Try using another keyboard.
If the problem remains, call for service.
Action
Replace the failed power supply, or remove
optional devices from the server.
