To GET and SET SNMP variables, you must specify the OID plus the instance.
However, you can use GETNEXT and specify the OID from the MIB (such as,
sysDescr), and get the first instance of that type from the SNMP agent. This works
for all types of objects.
Possible actions include:
SET - If you specify an OID and request the agent to set the value, the agent
sets the value or sends an error.
GETNEXT - If you do not know the OID of a variable, you must navigate the
agent by using the GETNEXT function until you obtain the variable of interest.
TRAP - All the above are requests sent from a Manager to the Agent. You can
use a TRAP, which requires the agent to send to the manager if it detects an
errors.
