Double-Pulse Test System Si/SiC Test Fixture Installation and Use Guide Selecting Gate Drive Resistors Figure 38 below shows a basic N-channel FET drive circuit. R is the external Gate Drive Resistor. Its value affects the switching speed and therefore switching loss of the FET.
  • Page 85: High Gate Resistor Values

Selecting Gate Drive Resistors High Gate Resistor Values Large gate resistor values decrease switching speed of the device resulting in increased power loss, a reduction in performance, and potential heat issues. Too high of a value over-damps the oscillation and extends the switching times. Optimal Gate Resistor Value As described above, increasing the gate resistor value reduces the ringing but also reduces switching speed and therefore increases switching loss.

  • Page 87 Selecting Gate Drive Resistors Switching characteristics of the DUT are influenced by the Gate resistor value. A small resistor value allows for faster switching but it increasing the ringing. A large gate resistor value slows down the turn-on of the device but allows for a more accurate gate charge measurement.

Remove the hot air tool as soon as the solder melts. 5 Your device should now be soldered to the Test Module. Inspect the solder joints with a microscope to ensure solder joints are good and that there are no solder bridges.
