The warranties made by MSA with respect to the product are voided if the product is not installed and used in accordance with the instructions in this manual. Please protect yourself and your employees by following the instructions.
• Use only components and accessories that are included with the original fire helmet or approved by MSA. Using unauthorized components or accessories can adversely affect fire helmet performance.
Failure to follow this warning can result in serious personal injury or death. Self-Contained MSA Cairns 1836 fire helmets are equipped with an exclusive interface that allows firefighters to Breathing wear them comfortably and safely with most SCBA facepieces. The exclusive design allows the fire Apparatus (SCBA) helmet to rest in the proper position for a secure fit of both the fire helmet and facepiece.

The ratchet adjusts in 1/8 inch (0.3 cm) increments, and the pivoting nape rotates 20 degrees to ensure a comfortable fit. 3. Lower the ear cover over your ears and the ratchet knob. NOTE: The headband adjustment size for the Cairns 1836 helmet accommodates hat sizes 5 - 3/8 to 8 - 1/2. Chinstrap WARNING! Never wear the fire helmet without fastening and tightening the chinstrap.

WARNING! (external) To maintain NFPA compliance, use ONLY MSA approved eye protection such as a Defender visor, faceshield, or goggles. Removing compliant eye protection voids the NFPA certification. MSA recommends wearing approved eye protection, such as safety glasses that comply with ANSI/ ISEA Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3 (current editions), in conjunction with the faceshield.
Maintenance WARNING! Component repair, alteration, or replacement of any MSA Cairns Fire Helmet must be performed by in by an MSA- authorized repair facility unless otherwise stated. Unauthorized component repair, alteration, or replacement of any MSA Cairns Helmet will void the factory warranty and may adversely affect the performance of the helmet. Carefully obey all of the procedures for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and storing the fire helmet.

• During cleaning, wear adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the detergent and washing machine manufacturers’ recommendations. • Do not use cleaning solvents, oils, varnishes, or polishes other than those specifically recommended by MSA or the decontamination washer manufacturer to clean or decontaminate fire helmets or fire helmet components.

4. Air drip or air dry the fire-helmet and/or helmet components. 5. Perform all functional tests in MSA Cairns User’s Manual. NOTE: Helmet shell, plastic liner, foam liner and suspension compnoents may not be dried in a cabinet gear dryer, they may only be air dried.

If available, put the components in the mesh bag from the applicable MSA Soft Good Replacement Kit. 3. Machine-wash the components with a mild liquid detergent with a pH range of 6.0 to 10.5 at the manufacturers recommended ratio of detergent to water, at a temperature no higher than 105°F (40°C).

When reassembling the Suspension Assembly, Pull on the suspension straps to ensure the suspension attachment points are fully engaged and secure. Failure to follow this warning can result in serious personal injury or death. To reassemble, reverse the steps for each component. MSA Cairns® 1836...
Storage Do not store equipment that is not explicitly authorized by MSA in or on the fire helmet. The storage of gloves, wedges, lights, and other equipment in or on the fire helmet can dramatically change the protective capacity of the fire helmet.
