Clean Boats, Clean Water: What You Need to Know Before You Launch
Boats can transfer plants and animals from one waterway to another. The transferred organisms are aquatic
invasive species (AIS).
AIS, specifi cally mussels, can clog drains, causing extensive damage to water supplies. The mussels often
cannot be seen with the naked eye because they are microscopic. Trailers can transport non-native plants,
affecting water quality and navigation.
Before you launch your boat, know the area's laws. Some localities require boat inspections or decontami-
nation to prevent the spread of AIS. If a stop at a decontamination station is required, draining and fl ushing
ballast tanks is part of the process.
Even when you are not legally required to clean your boat, take a few minutes to protect your boat and the
environment. CLEAN, DRAIN, and DRY after each use. Remove visible plants, then rinse the hull and trailer
with hot water. Next, drain the bilge, ballasts, and live wells.
Remove all drain plugs while transporting your boat. Always allow your boat to dry completely before launching
at a new waterbody. Each of the ballast reservoirs can be fl ushed by connecting the AIS fl ush hose to each of
the AIS style vent outlets and switching the ballast pumps to drain thus fl ushing the system.
Working together, we can keep our waterways clean and open!
