The depth of fieid( the "in
focus" area in front and in back
of the subject) decreases.
The depth of field
increases.
As general characteristics of lens, if you focus on some
subject, there is not only a area which the subject itself
in focus, but a zone in front and behind the subject that
is in focus.(We called 'Depth of field'. See page 83,164.)
Small aperture produces greater depth-of-field, large
aperture produces smaller depth-of-tield.
This characteristic can be used to take photograph for
both the subject and the background in focus.
Or you can focus attention on the subject by blurring the
background. Set the aperture depending on the type of
photograph you want to take.
At the Aperture Priority Auto Photography, when
you set the aperture in advance, shutter speed is
controlled automatically corresponding to
brightness of the subject.
