Ambient Room Noise
When a teleconferencing system transmits excessive ambient noise it is very noticeable to
a quieter far end room. In addition, the transmitting levels are compromised and may be
too low to the far end.
in most manufacturers' video codecs. These filters range from 12dB-20dB in noise
reduction. In addition, the Premier telephone interface has a noise reduction filter of
20dB. Extremely loud rooms may still transmit a portion of the room noise. A room
being used for teleconferencing should try to meet the following ambient noise level:
NC-25 (Noise Criteria) – corresponds to about 35dBa in the human voice range
There are different methods of reducing excessive noise:
1. HVAC noise – Most HVAC systems may be adjusted to reduce the airflow or
turbulence to the vents but maintain an adequate level of heating or cooling.
Avoid placing microphones next to noisy vents.
2. Codec or computer fans – Isolate these devices in a cabinet, cart or separate room
when possible.
3. Projector fan – Microphones should not be placed next to a projector.
A group of people having separate conversations may create an ambient noise issue.

How to Layout a System
Room Usage
Before an audio system is considered for teleconferencing, the usable parts of the room
should be evaluated. For example, a conference table centered in a room will usually
require microphones over or on the table. The same room with seating along the walls
may require additional microphones or the locations would change to the perimeter of the
