Installing a Component in the 5 1/4" Drive Bay

1.
Mounting the component in the drive carrier
A component such as an IDE hard drive can be mounted in the 5 1/4"
drive bay. The component should also be mounted in a drive carrier to
simplify its installation and removal from the chassis. These carriers also
help promote proper airflow. To add a component such as those noted
above, install a drive into the carrier with the printed circuit board side
toward the carrier so that the mounting holes align with those in the
carrier.
Secure the drive to the carrier with the four screws.
2.
Installing/removing 5 1/4" drive bay component
A single 5 1/4" IDE drive bay is located in the front of the chassis, making
it easily accessible for installation and removal. This component is not
hot-swappable, meaning system power must be turned off before
installing and/or removing. To remove the drive carrier, first power down
the system and then remove the top cover of the chassis. Unscrew the
retention screw at the top center of the drive, then push the drive carrier
out from the back until you can grasp and pull it out through the front of
the chassis. Attach the component to the carrier if installing. Then
reverse the drive carrier removal procedure to install the drive, making
sure you screw in the retention screw.
finished.
Drive Cables
• The floppy disk drive cable has seven twisted wires.
• A color mark on a cable typically designates the location of pin 1.
• A single floppy disk drive ribbon cable has 34 wires and two connectors to
provide for two floppy disk drives. The connector with twisted wires always
connects to drive A, and the connector that does not have twisted wires
always connects to drive B.
