Using an external power supply or Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
If you can ensure that the power network meets the specifications constantly at all times of day, then it is not
necessary to install a UPS. However, if the voltage falls too low to provide good quality, the printer will show a
system error.
Although the specified input voltage is in the range 200–240 V, bear in mind that a variation of ±10% is allowed
for; so the minimum voltage accepted by the printer is 180 Vac.
If an external power supply or UPS is used, it is required that its input supply wires include one uninterrupted
copper ground wire (protective earth) from the main building service panel. This ground wire should run in the
same conduit and should be at least equal in size to the phase wires.
HP does not recommend a specific UPS for your printer. Should you decide to use a UPS in line with the input of
the printer, the UPS must be rated to meet the power requirements of the printer. It should be connected by a
certified electrician in accordance with the Electrical Code requirements of the local jurisdiction where the
equipment is installed. The customer accepts responsibility and liability for any damages or injury resulting from
the addition of a UPS.
Output power
The output power required from the external power supply depends on the number of printers to be powered.
For each printer, add 10 kVA to the output power.
Installing an external power supply
Install the external power supply following all instructions and recommendations provided by the manufacturer
of the power supply; and ensure that the installation is in accordance with the Electrical Code requirements of the
local jurisdiction of the country where the equipment is installed.
In order to facilitate normal operations and maintenance of the printer, HP strongly recommends installing the
external power supply with at least some separation from the printer.
Once the external power supply is installed and connected to the mains, ensure that the AC output of the power
supply is in accordance with the printer power, current, and voltage requirements described in the appropriate
power specifications table below, before connecting it to the printer.
