Chapter 5
Functional Description
The aspirator uses a microprocessor to regulate a vacuum pump and bleed valve to control the
vacuum level (see Figure B-1 below). Transducers continuously monitor the vacuum level and
barometric pressure to ensure the vacuum level is as set by the user.
The collection canister is part of the pneumatic system. It collects fluids and prevents patient
waste from entering the aspirator. The Vacuum Port is a 3/8-inch barbed port on the top of the
aspirator. Gas from the tubing and collection canister passes through the vacuum manifold and
vacuum pump, then it is ejected through the 22 mm Exhaust Port on the side of the device.
Tubing connects the Vacuum Port to the collection canister. The canister also provides overflow
protection in the event the user attempts to aspirate more fluid than the collection canister can
hold.
