Attention: In Autonegotiation mode, the Nortel Ethernet Routing
Switch 5000 Series switches automatically provide the proper MDI/MDI-X
connection on the RJ-45 ports; thereby eliminating the need for crossover
cables. When Autonegotiation is disabled on 10/100 ports, they are
configured as an MDI-X connection.
Connecting a transceiver to the switch or switch stack
The following sections describe small form factor pluggable (SFP)
transceivers in the Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 Series. For
installation and removal procedures, see Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch
5000 Series Installation — SFPs and XFPs - NN47200-302.

Understanding transceiver connections
The following sections describe transceiver connections.
Small form factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers interface a device
motherboard to a fiber optic or unshielded twisted pair network cable. The
SFPs described in this section provide Ethernet at 1 gigabit per second
(Gbit/s).
Select the appropriate transceiver to provide the required reach. SFPs are
available for cable distances of up to 100 meters (m), 550 m, 10 kilometers
(km), 40 km, 70 km, and 120 km. Any reach over 100 m requires fiber
optic cable.
