THERMO-WAX INSPECTION

• Wear insulated gloves and adequate eye protection.
Keep flammable materials away from the electric
heating element. Do not let the thermo-wax or a
thermometer touch the pan, or you will get a false
reading.
Replace the thermo-wax if needle is lifting at room
temperature.
Heat a container of water with an electric heating
element for 5 minutes.
Suspend the thermo-wax in heated water to check its
operation.
Needle begins to lift: 49 – 57 °C (120 – 135 °F)
Needle lift: 6.5 mm (0.26 in) minimum
Replace the thermo-wax if the valve lifts at temperature
other than specified.

PILOT SCREW REPLACEMENT

Leave the pilot screw [1] and limiter cap [2] in place
during carburetor cleaning. Remove only if necessary
for carburetor repair.
Removal of the limiter cap requires breaking the pilot
screw. A new pilot screw and limiter cap must be
installed.
When the limiter cap has been broken off, remove the
broken pilot screw.
Place the spring onto the replacement pilot screw, and
install it into the carburetor.
Turn the pilot screw in until it is lightly seated and then
turn the screw out the required number of turns.
Pilot screw opening: 1-7/8 turns out
Apply LOCTITE
limiter cap and then install the cap so the stop prevents
the pilot screw from being turned counterclockwise.
Be careful to avoid turning the pilot screw while
installing the limiter cap. The pilot screw must stay at its
required setting.
