As a result the treatment would become ineffective and would increase the risk of emphysema. The powders provided by EMS are especially designed for use with the unit. Do not use powders from other manufacturers as this could damage the unit or could adversely affect its efficiency.
AIR-FLOW PLUS TREATMENT Indications The AIR-FLOW handy 3.0 PERIO / AIR-FLOW handy 3.0 PERIO Premium use with the handpiece AIR-FLOW PLUS, is recommended for the following cleaning procedures : • Removal of biofilm from pockets up to 4mm Contra-indications In order to avoid any risk of emphysema, hypersensitivity, bleeding and patient uncomfort, the use of supragingival powders (EMS CLASSIC, CLASSIC COMFORT and SOFT) is strictly forbidden during subgingival treatments (contacts with soft tissues, dentine, cementum).

Checking the turbine connection (Typical is shown) The unit is equipped with an adapter specially designed for the turbine connection of your dental unit. Only use the unit with this special turbine connection. To connect it to another type of turbine will damage it.
PREPARING FOR TREATMENT Nozzle installation Do not use the nozzle in case of doubt that package seal was broken, or that package or the nozzle is damaged. The single use nozzle must be used for one single patient only. Never reuse a nozzle because treatment will be ineffective and the risk of emphysema will increase.
HANDPIECE CONNECTION Drying the sterilized handpiece PLUS PERIO Clean, disinfect and sterilize the handpiece before first use and after each treatment as described in the chapter "Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing" in this manual. Following the thermal disinfection, blow the interior of the handpiece from both sides with compressed air to eliminate possible humidity.
Connecting to the dental unit The turbine connection and the connector must be absolutely dry. Moisture at the connection can cause blockage in the air/powder channels of the unit. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 16 03/12/2018 13:57:35...
Setting the water flow rate Never use the handpiece without water flow. It is better to set the water flow rate before using the device for the first time while the powder chamber is empty. Set the water flow rate from dental unit to obtain a small continuous spray. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 18 03/12/2018 13:57:36...
Make sure that the powder chamber and the cap of the powder chamber are absolutely dry. Moisture can cause the powder to cake. Use only powder provided by EMS. Do not go over the maximum limit as indicated on the picture above. The openings of the tubes should not be covered with powder.
Closing the cap Clean the threads of the powder chamber before screwing on the cap. Ensure that the cap is correctly screwed to avoid projection of powder. Do not shake the device as this could cause the powder to clog the tubes. Check that you get a water spray.
PRECAUTIONS Wear a mask and eye protection A powder jet accidentally directed into the eye can cause severe ocular injury. Therefore it is strongly recommended for all persons to wear eye protection during treatment. To limit the risk of bacterial or viral infections and inhalation of powder, we recommend to the dentist and the hygienist to wear gloves, protective glasses and a safety mask of protection.

Rinsing the patient mouth before treatment for at least 30 seconds with the BacterX pro* solution ® will greatly prevent bacteria development during the treatment. * BacterX pro is not available in the USA. ® Application of Vaseline on patient's lips will prevent them becoming dry and chapped. ®...
AIR-FLOW PERIO TREATMENT Power setting air/powder and water flow rate adjustment Never use the PERIO-FLOW handpiece without water flow; this could cause lesions in the treatment area. • Start the treatment with water flow rate adjustment control set at medium setting. Then adjust the irrigation to obtain a flow as required for treatment.
Page 42
The handpiece and the high-speed evacuator must be handled by the same operator. The high-speed evacuator is thus directed in an optimal way towards the nozzle. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 30 03/12/2018 13:57:43...
Working Technique The nozzle length enables cleaning pockets over 5 mm deep. Never treat with AIR-FLOW handy 3.0 PERIO the pockets down to the apex. At least 3 mm of bone must be present to prevent the risk of emphysema. Verify with radiographs pre-treatment. Do not use the PERIO-FLOW method immediately after a sub gingival scaling or a root planning treatment.
Page 46
Carry on the treatment with short tiny vertical motions of the nozzle. EMS powder/air mixture confined by a water jet is sprayed into the periodontal pocket. Due to the mechanical action of the air, powder and water spray, the subgingival biofilm is eliminated from the root surface.
Page 48
SEC... 4. Release the pedal and wait until the spray stops. When removing the foot from the control pedal, the air/powder jet continues for a few more seconds. Take these seconds into account. 5. Remove the nozzle from the pocket and repeat the operation in the next pocket. Never spray outside periodontal pockets.
End of the treatment Removing the handpiece and the nozzle Disconnect the handpiece from the device by rotating the handpiece while pulling the handpiece along the axis. Remove the nozzle as shown. To remove the nozzle with the nozzle remover, please refer to the "PERIO-FLOW Nozzle Remover"...
AIR-FLOW PLUS TREATMENT Position the pump for sublingual aspiration. Use the high-speed evacuator of your dental unit to evacuate the air/powder mixture deviated by the treated tooth. The handpiece and the high-speed evacuator must be handled by the same operator. The high- speed evacuator is thus directed in an optimal way towards the nozzle.
Working Technique Direct the nozzle strictly towards the surface of the tooth. Respect a distance of 3 to 5 mm. You can vary the angle between nozzle and tooth from 30 to 60 degrees. The flatter the angle, the larger the area cleaned. During treatment, direct the high-speed pump towards the air/powder jet deviated by the tooth.
Page 56
The supragingival air/powder jet is powerful. It can cause injury to the gums or an emphysema caused by the introduction of air into the soft tissue spaces. It is strongly recommended that the operator never direct the nozzle directly at the gum tissue or into the gingival sulcus. During treatment, make small circular motions.
Working Technique in periodontal shallows pockets 4 mm MAXI Direct the nozzle strictly towards the surface of the tooth. Respect a distance of 3 to 5 mm. During treatment, make small horizontal or circular motions. You can vary the angle between 30 to 60 degrees. The flatter the angle, the larger the area cleaned. Never stay more than 5 seconds on the same place.
Precautions to be taken at the end of the treatment SEC... When the foot is lifted of the foot pedal, the air/powder jet continues for a few more seconds. End the treatment taking this time frame into account. The nozzle can be introduced into the high-speed evacuator still in the patient mouth. This allows time for the unit to decompress with no risk of hurting soft tissues.
Fluoride Application After completion of treatment, the patient can do a final rinse. After the treatment, the teeth are practically free from mucin. It is thus advised to carry out a topics application of fluorine. It is then important to use a colorless fluoride. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 50 03/12/2018 13:57:51...
Patient Information After the treatment, the teeth are clean and the dental cuticule is completely eliminated. Its recon- stitution by salivary proteins requires between 2 and 3 hours. During this time, the teeth do not have any more natural protection with respect to colouring. Tell your patient that during 2 to 3 hours following treatment, he should neither smoke, nor consume food or drinks which could strongly colour the teeth (tea, coffee...).
Start the cleaning MAX. Cleaning, disinfection and sterilizations must be carried out immediately, no later than 30 minutes after the end of the treatment. To easily disconnect the handpiece from the body, rotate slightly the handpiece while pulling in the axis.
CLEANING, DISINFECTING AND STERILIZING Cleaning the handpiece Clean the handpiece with the EasyClean supplied with the unit before disinfecting and sterilizing. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 56 03/12/2018 13:57:53...
Cleaning the unit The unit is not protected against water spray. Clean the unit only with an alcohol-based, commercially available (ethanol, isopropanol), colorless disinfectant. The use of scouring powder or an abrasive sponge will damage its surface. Do not submerge the unit in a disinfectant bath. It would be likely to be damaged. Make sure the handpiece connection of the cord is dry FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 60 03/12/2018 13:57:54...
Daily cleaning of the device Clean at the end of the work day the powder chamber. Empty the powder chamber. Suck the powder residues with the high-speed evacuator of the dental unit. Clean the threads of the powder chamber with alcohol (ethanol, isopropanol). FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 62 03/12/2018 13:57:55...
Daily cleaning of the cap Clean and disinfect the cap at the end of the work day. The cap must be absolutely dry before closing. To ensure a good tightness, the cap ring must be replaced at least once a year. FB-543_CN_rev_C_Handy 3 Perio.indd 64 03/12/2018 13:57:56...
MAINTENANCE Replacing the cap and the O-rings Check the state of the threads of the powder chamber and cap. The powder chamber is pressurized during use. The condition of the powder chamber and cap is an important safety factor. Replace faulty parts immediately. If an o-ring is damaged or worn out, it must be replaced immediately.
