    Chapter| Introduction Introduction ARL EQUINOX X-Ray diffractometers are designed for measuring of crystalline samples (powder, bulk, metals, thin layers, etc...), phase identification, nanoscale structural analysis, non-destructive quality control, as well as for many other applications. Thermo Fisher Scientific develops and sells many sample holders that can be plugged in Thermo Fisher Scientific diffractometers in order to analyze the samples.

Please take notice of all warnings, cautions and notes to ensure the correct and safe functioning of the instrument. ● Never place the sample holder near an open flame or in an excessively hot environment.

    Chapter| SSCA Sample Holder Description SSCA Sample Holder Description This sample holder (SSCA - Sample Spinner in Controlled Atmosphere) can be used to analyze pow- der sample in reflection mode within a confined environment. The sample holder SSCA is dedicated to isolate a powder sample from external environment.

    Chapter| SSCA Sample Holder Description Set up of the SSCA in ARL EQUINOX Insert the sample holder in the sample holder mounting hole of the instrument, do not use any un- necessary force. The sample holder and the mounting hole (Ø 30 mm) are designed to avoid any mechanical clearance resulting in irreproducible results.

    Chapter| SSCA Sample Holder Description Setting of the Incidence Angle You can only perform analysis in reflection mode. Angle of incidence has to be set to the appropriate value. The incidence angle indicator consists of two rings. One ring is fixed while the second one is free. This allows the sample holder to rotate in order to change the incidence angle.

    Chapter| Sample Preparation Procedure Sample Preparation Procedure Preparing the Sample Outside a Glove Box In order to prepare your sample, you will need a powder mount, a spatula, a glass slide (as used for microscopes) and a sample cup. Caution! The sample cup contains a magnet. Bringing too close to a magnetic metal will attract it.

    Chapter| Sample Preparation Procedure Tighten the cover by screwing the 8 x M4 screws. Tighten in diagonal to homogenize the pressure around the cover. Preparing the Sample Inside a Glove Box All this procedure must be performed inside an appropriate glove box if sample is air sensitive or presents any risk.
  • Page 11 Chapter| Sample Preparation Procedure CAUTION! Do not fill at pressure above 2 bar! The design of the SSCA does not allow high pressure (all SSCA cells are pressure tested up to 6 bars). Gas handling line for the SSCA purging or gas replacement. When a powder sample is set inside a glove box, it can be necessary to replace the gas inside the SSCA volume.

    Chapter| Sample Preparation Procedure Proceed according to the following steps: Introduce opened parts of SSCA and valve adaptor inside the glove box. Insert the Kapton disk to the crucible housing Set the O-ring to its lodging. Prepare the sample on the crucible as described in Preparing the Sample Outside a Glove Box on page 9 .

    Chapter| Maintenance and Cleaning Maintenance and Cleaning Gearings can be cleaned with a soft and dry brush. Check regularly the electric connector. If there is any damaged, immediately proceed to replacement. Inform Thermo Fisher Scientific service. Friction disk (Ref. 100421027) can be replaced each time wear streaks are observed.
