ground
The PCB will function properly if the +17 V is supplied from the +12 V supply, so only two
supplies are required for test.
NOTE—It would be prudent to clamp the 5 V supply to 5.5 V, and the 3.3 V supply to
3.6 V, until proper voltage regulator operation is confirmed after first power-up. If either
regulator malfunctions, many expensive ICs will be damaged beyond repair.
2.2
Serial Data I/O
There is one serial data input (J5_12) and one serial data output (J5_13). The serial
input is compatible with two different protocols:
"old" SmartSpeaker—As described in OP173549, this protocol is compatible with the out-
put from CD-50, CD-20, etc.
"new" SmartSpeaker—This protocol uses 4800 baud RS-232 timing (8 data bits, 1 stop bit,
no parity) with 5V logic levels.
The unit will respond to whichever protocol is used first after power-on. Switching from one
protocol to the other after power-up will not work; switch the power off (i.e., reboot the sys-
tem) before changing the protocol. Regardless of which input data protocol is used, the
output data protocol is always 4800 baud RS-232 (5V logic levels).
The serial data input is compatible with 5V logic levels (TTL or CMOS). The serial data
output is derived directly from a microcontroller port; its logic levels and drive capability are
compatible with 5V CMOS. Both input and output are clamped and filtered and are rela-
tively tolerant to ESD, overvoltages, shorts to ground, etc.
