In general, the Switch 212M and 224M are designed to be used as desktop
switches, but they can also be used as a segment switch. That is, with their
high performance, they can be used for interconnecting network segments—
simply connect the network hubs that form those segments to the Switch.
In the illustration above, two Ethernet hubs with PCs, printers, and local
servers attached, are both connected to a Switch 212M. The devices attached
to the two hubs can now communicate with each other through the switch.
They can also all communicate with the server that is connected to the switch
through its 100Base-TX port. Connecting the server to the 100 Mbps port
allows a large number of users to access the server without causing network
congestion.
The connections between the switch and the MDI-X ports on the hubs is
through "cross-over" twisted-pair cable. If the hubs have MDI ports, you can
connect to them through "straight-through" cable. The connection to the
server is through category 5 "straight-through" twisted-pair cable.
The switch, in turn, is connected to a network backbone through fiber-optic
cabling connected to a 100Base-FX transceiver installed in the switch. Now,
all the devices on these network segments can access other network resources
that are connected elsewhere on the network backbone.
