Gearbox Removal and Installation
NOTE: The gearbox may be removed with the mower deck
installed on the tractor. However, removing the mower
deck first is usually more expedient, allowing direct access
to fasteners and components. For procedures covering
mower deck removal and installation, see MOWER
DECK INSTALLATION & REMOVAL in Section 6.
1. Remove the mower deck (see MOWER INSTALLA-
TION & REMOVAL, Section 6).
2. Remove the drive shaft from the gearbox input shaft.
See Drive Shaft Removal and Installation in this sec-
tion.
3. Loosen the drive belt.
4. Remove each of the capscrews (A, Figure 32) and
lockwashers (B) securing the gearbox to the mower
deck. For 54" mower decks, remove the nuts (D)
securing the U-brackets (C) to the deck (remove the
U-brackets as required after the gearbox is removed
from the mower deck).
5. Remove the gearbox along with the drive pulley (C)
from the mower deck.
6. Install in reverse order of removal.

Gearbox Disassembly

Refer to Figure 22 for diagram.
NOTE: Cap-to-gearbox gasket thickness varies and is
important for proper gearbox function. Gaskets of 0.003",
0.005", and 0.015" thickness are used, and the dimension
is stamped on each gasket. Mark each cap for location
and note the gasket thickness during disassembly.
Replace with gasket of identical thickness.
1. Remove the drain plugs (Ref. No. 11, Figure 22) and
drain the gear oil from the gearbox.
2. Remove each of the capscrews (Ref. No. 1) and caps
(Ref. No. 2 and Ref. No. 15) from the gearbox.
3. Remove and disassemble the shaft and bearing
assemblies. Clean, inspect and replace parts as
needed.
NOTE: If the gearbox housing or major components
(bearings, bearing cones, shafts, gears, etc.) need to be
replaced, replace the complete gearbox assembly.

Gearbox Assembly

1. Assemble in reverse order of disassembly.
2. With gearbox level and drive pulley facing down, fill
with 80W90 gear oil through side plug hole until oil is
level with bottom of plug hole. Install and torque plug.
