2. Install the center spar. You need to cut a slot through the wing for the 1/64" ply
spar. The slot is centered in the spar notch and is 24" long, centered on the length
of the wing. The slot is cut all the way through the wing. A #11 xacto is just long
enough to cut the slot. Use a straight edge to cut the notch, ensuring your blade is
perpendicular to the wing.
3. Glue the 24" long 1/64" ply into the slot. You can use white glue, foam safe CA, or
epoxy. It doesn't have to be glued well as the top and bottom spars will help hold it
in place. If you use a long cure epoxy, you can glue the center spar at the same
time you glue the top and bottom spars.
4. Install the top and bottom spars. Measure and cut two lengths of 1/2" plastic
strapping so that they are the length of the wing. Sand the plastic so that the epoxy
will grip better. Lay a strip down on a sheet of wax paper and apply epoxy to the
strapping, ensuring that there is an even layer of epoxy with no dry areas. Lay the
strapping in the notch on the wing and apply a length of wing tape or packing tape
over the strapping to hold it in place. I find it hard to apply 5 minute epoxy fast
enough before it hardens. You can use 30 minute epoxy to avoid this. The tape
over the spar is removed after the epoxy sets up.
5. Install the second spar in the same manner.
6. Epoxy the servo plates to the tops of the wings so that the rear of the back plate is
2.5" from the trailing edge of the wing and the inside of the plate is 1.5" from the
center of the wing. The spacing between the plates is determined by what kind of
servo you are using. I like to add about 1/32" more gap than the length of the servo.
Covering the Wing
Next, you are going to cover the Panic using either colored wing tape, or clear packing tape.
You can use additional colored tapes to give your wing detail.
Choosing a Pattern
Make sure you choose a high contrast pattern using at least two colors, with the darker
color on the bottom and the lighter color on top. This will help you differentiate up from
down and left from right. Try drawing your pattern out on paper before attempting it on
your wing.
Applying the Covering Tape
For the Panic, we recommend using wing tape (a colored tape) which can be purchased from
Mountain Models or clear packing tape which can be purchased at many office supply stores.
Lightly sand the entire wing. Remove all the dust or the tape will not adhere.
1.
The adhesive spray is known to contain acetone which will eat foam. In order to
minimize the problems, you must have a clean nozzle emitting a fine mist, which is
kept a good distance away from the wing and moved quickly. Apply a very light
