Ratio determines how much gain reduction the expander applies when the audio
signal falls below the threshold level. For example, a ratio of 4:1 means that if the
input signal falls below the threshold by 1 dB, the output signal from the expander will
be 4 dB lower than the threshold.
The available ratios on AD-300 are listed as follows:
1:1
1.6:1
2:1
4:1
8:1
16:1
32:1
64:1
100:1
The attack time (50 – 500 msec) sets how quickly the expander starts to reduce the
gain after the audio level drops below the threshold.
The decay time or release time (300 – 2000 msec) sets how quickly the expander
stops having an effect after the level crosses above the threshold.
Limiter
A limiter limits the audio signal to a certain threshold. While a compressor smoothly
reduces the gain above the threshold, a limiter completely prevents any additional
gain above the threshold. The graph below shows a limiting ratio of infinity to one.
