Basic Troubleshooting

Problem
Engine does not start,
or stalls.
Engine does not
accelerate, is hard to
start, or runs
erratically.
Engine overheats.

Cause
No fuel in tank
Spark plug fouled
Improper fuel mix: too much oil
Spark plug fouled
Obstructed muffler and/or
exhaust port
Leaky crankshaft seals
Dirty or clogged air cleaner
Improper fuel mix: not enough
oil
Dirty cooling fins and/or fan
blades
Damaged clutch
Broken connecting rod or
crank gear
Low engine performance:
compression loss
Obstructed exhaust port
Oil or grease on clutch
Broken or worn springs
Soil buildup on ramming shoe
Broken parts in ramming
system or crankcase
Engine operating speed too
high

Basic Troubleshooting
Remedy
Add fuel.
Clean or replace spark plug.
Drain fuel and refill with proper
fuel/oil mixture.
Clean or replace spark plug.
Clear obstructions.
Replace crankshaft seals.
Service air cleaner.
Drain fuel and refill with proper
fuel/oil mixture.
Clean cooling fins and/or fan
blades.
Repair or replace clutch.
Replace broken parts.
Adjust compression.
Clear obstructions.
Remove oil/grease from clutch.
Replace broken parts.
Clean soil from ramming shoe.
Replace broken parts.
Adjust engine operating speed.
