6 Electrical connection

intrinsically safe devices.
Î Only connect intrinsically safe devices
intended for use in intrinsically safe
circuits to certified intrinsically safe input-
connected units.
Î Do not place intrinsically safe devices

without certification.

Selecting cables and wires
Î Observe clause 12 of EN 60079-14:
2008 (VDE 0165, Part 1) for installation
of the intrinsically safe circuits.
Î Clause 12.2.2.7 applies when running
multi-core cables and wires with more
than one intrinsically safe circuit.
Î Preferably use connecting lines with
minimum 0.5 mm² conductor cross-
section and 6 to 12 mm outside
diameter.
Î Radial thickness of the insulation of a
conductor for common insulating
materials (e.g. polyethylene): minimum
0.2 mm.
Î Diameter of an individual wire in a fine-
stranded conductor: minimum 0.1 mm.
