Hardwareadvantages
Oneadvantageisthetransmissionofvehiclecameradata.Vehiclecameras(IP-based)arenot
connectedtoonecontrolunit,butseveralcontrolunitsbyEthernetwhichallowstheseunitstoaccess
thecameradataflowefficiently.Thenetworkisthereforeveryflexibleandiswellpreparedforthe
future.
Anotherimportantadvantageisthefastprogrammingofcontrolunits.Theprogrammingtimesare
reducedsignificantlyviaEthernet.WhereasaCANbuscanonlytransmitdatawithamaximumlength
of8bytespermessage,Ethernetmessageshavealengthofover1500bytes.Theuserdataratethus
increases:Considerablymoremessagepackagescanbetransmittedinashorterperiod.
TheOABREthernetconnectionequatestoadditionalweightandcostsavings,duetoonlyusing2
wires.
Datatransfer
FordatatransferinthestandardEthernet100BASE-TX,onelinepairisneededfortransmittingdata
andonepairforreceiving.
IncontrasttothestandardEthernetdescribedabove,withtheOABREthernetthedataisnow
transmittedwithonelinepair.Thismeanswiththe2-wireOABREthernet,asimultaneoustransmit-
receivemodeisdoneviaeachofthetwosinglepaircables.Thetwolinestransmitasumsignal
differentially.Ifalineisinterrupted,asignalcannolongerflowbackthroughthesecondwirevia
thedifferentialtransmission.Asymmetricaltransmissionwouldthusnolongerbepossible,the
communicationviathedatabuscomestoastandstill.
Duringthetransmission,messageswith100 MBit/saretransmittedsimultaneouslyinbothdirections
viathelines.Intotal,thisgivesamaximumtransmissionspeedof200 MBit/sofdata.Inthetransceiver,
thetransmittedmessageissubtractedfromthebussignal.Theresultisthemessageoftheopposite
transceiver.AschematicdiagramofthetransceiveroftheOABREthernetshowshowthedata
