Capture Component
Filter Group – Compares packets on ring to criteria specified in a
-
filter expression to determine whether packets need to be captured
for analysis.
Packet Capture Group – Performs the capture of packets meeting
-
criteria specified by the Filter Group.
To implement RMON functions provided by the Capture
NOTE
component (Filter and Packet Capture groups), you must
increase the MicroMMAC-T's LDRAM capacity from the default
8 MB to 12 MB by replacing the 4MB LDRAM SIMM with an 8
MB LDRAM SIMM. You can order the 8MB-FPM-UGK-60
SIMM upgrade kit for this purpose from Cabletron Systems.
See
Section 3.2.7
Distributed LAN Monitor (DLM)
The DLM agent enables the MicroMMAC-T to perform polling functions
that would have to be carried out by a network management station.
Instead of having to continually poll multiple devices on a ring, the
network management station need only poll a single device, the
MicroMMAC-T, the network management station's proxy, to get
information about devices on the ring.
You configure the DLM agent to perform either IP-based PING (are you
alive?) or SNMP GET (has an alarm occurred?) requests, but not both
concurrently, through a remote network management application that has
DLM-configuration capabilities (Cabletron's SPMA for the
MicroMMAC-T for example). For both operations the MicroMMAC-T
maintains a database, specified in the DLM application, of devices to be
polled and the NMS(s) to receive traps.
If configured to perform ping operations, the MicroMMAC-T sends a trap
to the NMS(s) identifying a device that does not respond to a PING
request. If configured to perform SNMP GET requests, the
MicroMMAC-T maintains an additional database, specified in the DLM
application, of OIDs to poll from MIB-based devices listed in the device
ID database. It sends a trap to the NMS(s) identifying a device with an
OID registering a threshold violation.
