Exhaust Manifold Anodes
Raw water cooled engines only: These anodes must
be checked yearly or once every 100 hours to deter-
mine the amount of erosion that has occurred. If the
anode is more than 1/3 eroded, replace.
Closed cooling system engines: no service
required.
The exhaust manifold anode replacement kit (items 4–
7 below) is provided pre-assembled.
1 O-ring
2 Anode – Exhaust elbow; torque to 15–21 ft. lb. (20–
28 Nm) when replacing
3 Screws – Anode housing cover; torque to
6–8 ft. lb. (8–11 Nm) when replacing assembly
4 Cover – Anode housing
5 Gasket – Anode housing
6 Anode
7 Screws – Anode; torque to 4–5 ft. lb. (5–7 Nm)
when replacing
Ignition System
Maintenance for the ignition system is limited to cap
and rotor inspections and replacing the spark plugs.
For more complex repairs see the Workshop Manual
or your Volvo Penta dealer.
Firing order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
NOTICE! When replacing or installing spark plugs,
plug wires, distributor caps or rotors it is critical that the
plug wires are reinstalled from the distributor cap to the
correct spark plug (cylinder). If the plug wires are con-
nected to the wrong cylinder an engine miss-fire will
occur. The miss-fire may cause engine damage. A
miss-fire on a catalyst equipped engine will also
destroy the catalyst element. This damage can be
expensive and is not covered by warranty.
Distributor Cap and Rotor
Check for corrosion on the metal contacts inside the
cap and on the rotor.
Once the contacts have corroded the engine will start
to run poorly, burn more fuel, and may eventually stop
running completely. Check the cap and rotor fre-
quently, at least annually, and whenever troubleshoot-
ing poor engine performance.
