Using the Enhanced Diagnostics diskette

Complete the following steps to start the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics diskette:
1. Turn off any attached devices and the computer.
2. Insert the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Turn on all attached devices; then, turn on the computer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
When the tests have been completed, you can view the test log by selecting Utility
from the top of the screen.

Emergency recovery-repair diskette

At your earliest opportunity, create a recovery-repair diskette and store it in a safe
place. In the unlikely event that the Windows desktop becomes unusable, you can
use the recovery-repair diskette to access the Product Recovery program.
Additional information about the diskette is in Access IBM. For information about
using this diskette, see "Using the emergency recovery-repair diskette."

Creating the emergency recovery-repair diskette

Complete the following steps to create a recovery-repair diskette:
1. From Access IBM, click the How do I... tab; then, click Protect data.
2. Click Creating emergency diskettes.
3. Click Recovery Repair diskette.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Using the emergency recovery-repair diskette

In some circumstances, files on your hard disk might become unusable so that the
F11 prompt is not displayed when you start up the computer. You can use the
recovery-repair diskette to access the Product Recovery program and attempt to
restore system function. For instructions on how to create this diskette, see
"Creating the emergency recovery-repair diskette."
Complete the following steps to access the Product Recovery program on the hard
disk:
1. Insert the recovery-repair diskette.
2. Turn off the computer.
3. Turn on the computer, and follow the directions on the screen.
Note: If the repair operation finishes without error, the F11 prompt will be displayed
If an error message is displayed during the repair operation and the repair operation
cannot be completed, you might have a problem with the Product Recovery
program or the partition that contains the Product Recovery program. Use a Product
Recovery CD (see "Recovery CD (Windows XP)" on page 112) to access the
Product Recovery program.
