Electric starter operates, but the engine cranks slowly or not at all (HZA type only)
Will the engine start using the recoil?
Yes
Check the no load voltage at the battery.
12.7 V or more
Check engine compression
Spec: 73 psi @ 600 rpm
OK
Check the cranking voltage at the starter
motor

9.0 V or more
(starter engaged)
10.5 V or more
(starter disengaged)
Remove the starter motor and check if
the pinion is stuck or contaminated with
grease or oil

Replace the starter motor

If pinion does not lift and
engage the flywheel:
less than 10.5 V

SERVICE INFORMATION
Go to "HARD STARTING WITH THE
RECOIL STARTER OR POOR
ENGINE PERFORMANCE"
Charge the battery for 24 hours using
PN 06320-VH7-UA1 charger.
Disconnect the charger, and let the
battery rest for 1 hour. Recheck the
battery voltage is 12.90 volts or more.
If less than 12.90 volts, the battery
must be replaced.
Check the valve clearance
(P.
valve clearance is within spec, the
camshaft decompressor may be
sticking. Replace the camshaft
(P.

Check the negative terminal connector
and ground wire.
