5.4 DEF Tanks

5.4.1 DEF Tank Sizing

To meet regulatory requirements and adhere to good service practices the DEF tank capacity must
facilitate at least a 1:1 filling ratio with the ULSD tank. This can be achieved considering a
maximum DEF consumption rate of 4% of fuel – a higher percentage may be used in the
calculation if a ratio greater than 1:1 is required. In all cases it must be calculated considering the
maximum tilt angle of the machine under all operating conditions.
The ratio can be simply calculated for any given tank using the following information:
Operational volume of
DEF at maximum
machine gradeability
A ratio of greater or equal to 1 is acceptable.
Any ratio less than 1 will require specific Applications approval and will be application dependant.
*The total operational volume of diesel fuel must include the volume of any remote bulk fuel supply
that the application uses during machine operation refer to section 5.4.4.
Detail on the volume apportionments of the DEF tank are shown in the Fig 5.6 below. Further detail
on the actual tank volumes of Perkins DEF tanks is shown in Table 5.4 below.
