FAQ

The brochure says that DVD-R is not suitable
for recording TV programs. Why?
1) With the expansion of digital TV programs in future,
we expect more programs will be restricted for one
copy only, and these programs cannot be recorded
on DVD-R due to standards.
2) The Toshiba HDD&DVD Video Recorder has a re-
encoding feature, capable of creating DVD-R
without deterioration in the image and sound
quality. It may include portions for one second each
at the beginning and end of advertisement, even if
you delete it, due to the DVD Video standards
(when used with DVD-R). (If you re-encode using
the rate conversion copy beforehand, you can
eliminate these portions, but the image and sound
quality deteriorate slightly, and it also takes more
time creating it.)
3) You cannot repeat operations of recording and
deleting, you cannot physically delete unnecessary
portions after writing, and consequently you cannot
use it like a video tape to share among family
members.
4) To make a chapter at a precise location by frame
for direct access to the beginning of a music piece
(to skip to the unit with the remote controller), you
need to specify it before you record the program,
and it is virtually impossible to do this with TV
programs that you can divide and specify only after
it is recorded.
5) DVD-R is not enclosed in a cartridge. It does not
have physical pit like commercial DVD-Video
software products, so it is not as resistant as
commercial software products against fingerprints
and scratches. If you record with fingerprints,
scratches, or dust on the disc, the image may
partially contain noise, or at worst you cannot
record nor playback. If you use a DVD-R disc to
record an important program, which you cannot
purchase anywhere, we recommend you create a
backup copy on a DVD-RAM disc.
6) No DVD-R is double-sided like 9.4 GB DVD-RAM
(all DVD-R are one-sided with 4.7 GB capacity),
offering only half the capacity when using the same
image quality. DVD-RAM is more suitable for
storing a large amount of recording data.
DVD-R should be used for distribution of works done
by those who are familier with one-time recording
operation, such as video program developer or PC
users. To record TV programs, use DVD-RAM discs at
the DVD VR standard, which allows repeated
operation of recording and deletion safely in the same
way as VHS.

What is the possible reason when I fail to create
a DVD-R? And why?
First, you could fail while setting the Create DVD-R
screen.
Second, you could also fail after pressing the Start
button.
For the first case, you only confirm the control
information before writing to a DVD-R disc.
Consequently you are not able to create a disc (not
able to register parts) due to "Insufficient conditions to
create a disc". In this case you can still use the DVD-R
disc.
Main conditions:
a) The original content has been recorded in the DVD-
R Broadcast Record mode set to OFF.
b) "4:3" and "Wide" (squeeze) are mixed in one title
(failure occurs if these are mixed).
c) Copy protection information is included (failure
occurs if it is included).
The second case is further divided into two situations.
1) While an internal preliminary preparation is made
for creating a DVD-R, failure occurs if a problem is
found when checking the above points b) and c)
with the image at the starting point of title or
chapter for the DVD-R.
In this case, the disc has not been written yet, and
you can still use the disc.
2) After the writing operation starts, a problem may be
found for the above point b) or c) while writing to
the disc. Or a writing error may occur while writing
due to a bad disc, scratched/dirty disc. You cannot
reuse this disc any more.
If you are not able to create a DVD-R disc, confirm if
the failure occurs before or after writing to the disc to
find out the reason and if the disc can be reused or
not.
Incidentally, the play list always shows "Copy not
known" for its title information. The system searches
all parts, consisting of original titles and chapters
(including original titles and chapters of the source
when a play list is created from another play list). If it
finds one or more of parts that prohibit copying, it does
not register the parts for creating a DVD-R.
