DVD-RAM disc
This disc is enclosed in a cartridge and used for both
recording and playback, with a capacity of 4.7 GB on a
layer on one side, or 9.4 GB on a layer on both sides.
Two types of discs are available: one for video recording
and other for PC data. The disc for recording video
carries the label on the package, specifying the recording
duration, such as 120 min. The disc for PC data can be
used for recording general free broadcast programs, but
not for such programs that allow recording only once.
DVD video disc
Commercially available playback-only discs for movies
and music cannot be copied to the internal HDD, and its
content cannot be displayed on the CONTENT MENU.
DVD-R disc
This disc may be used for playback when it is correctly
formatted for DVD video.
CD-R/CD-RW disc
This disc may be used for playback when it is recorded in
the CD-DA (audio CD) format only.
Track
For an audio CD, a piece of music is recorded as one
track.
Title
On a DVD video disc, a title is a larger unit. You may find
more than one title on a disc, and more than one chapter
in each title, depending on the disc. For a DVD-RAM
disc or internal HDD, one recording session represents
one title. An edited play list also represents one title.
When you see a list of titles on the CONTENT MENU,
every thumbnail screen displayed in the list represents
one title.
Chapter
On a DVD video disc, a title may contain smaller units
called chapters, which are divided for every scene, but
some discs do not have chapters. For a DVD-RAM disc
or internal HDD, a title contains only one chapter after
recording is finished. Every time you pause while
recording, or when you edit to create a chapter, a division
is created making one chapter before that division and
another after that. When you see a list of chapters on the
CONTENT MENU, every thumbnail screen displayed in
the list represents one chapter.
Original Title
An original title represents a title that is recorded on the
HDD or DVD-RAM disc. It can be copied or edited,
basically without any restriction.

Original Chapter
An original chapter represents a chapter contained in the
original title.
Playlist (PL)
A playlist determines the order of selected original titles
and/or chapters to palyback for an indivisual disk, either
the HDD or each DVD-RAM disc. You can create a
playlist, using Edit Play List on the Edit Navigation
screen. When created, a playlist is treated as a title, but
it is just data conducting the order of playback, and the
disc space remains almost unchanged. If you copy a
playlist, all the original portions listed on the playlist are
copied, and the playlist will become the original title on
the target media.
Thumbnail
Thumbnail screens are those small representations
displayed on the CONTENT MENU. Through the initial
setting, a scene is captured when recording is started
and it becomes a thumbnail. You can select any scene for
the title thumbnail, by setting the Title Thumbnail on the
Quick Menu.
Copy Guard/Copyright Protection
Some of the commercial image software products and
pay programs use copy guard signals to prevent the
program from being recorded. Toshiba HDD & DVD Video
Recorder stops recording when a copy guard signal is
detected in a program. A false signal may cause stopping
the recording operation, when recording from a video
tape through the external input terminal, if it has
excessive tracking shift or if it produces noise similar to
the copy guard signal during a search operation.
CONTENT MENU
The CONTENT MENU thumbnails screen display the
contents recorded on the HDD and DVD-RAM disc. The
Title List shows all of the original titles and playlists
(every view shows six titles, and other titles can be
displayed on the succeeding pages). They are displayed
in the chronological order recorded on the Toshiba HDD
& DVD Video Recorder from the oldest one to the most
recent one. Original titles are displayed in chronological
order first, and playlists are displayed in chronological
order after the most recent original title. You can also
view thumbnails of chapters ("Chapter List") within a
selected (highlighted) title. Chapters are displayed in the
order of playback.
