5. EDGE SENSOR SELECTION

5.1 General Considerations

NOTE:
The guidelines described in this document must only be carried out by qualified personnel. Such
personnel must have the appropriate training and authorization regarding operation, maintenance and
modification to the electronic controls.
The machine control must be electrically actuated.
It must be possible to immediately stop any dangerous operation of the machine.
In particular, the machine stopping times must be known and, if necessary, measured.
The stop performance of the machine must additionally undergo validation during routine
maintenance by trained and competent personnel. Should an evaluation render results indicating
degradation of the stop function beyond acceptable ratings, the machine must be locked out until
serviced/repaired and restored to nominal conditions.
Verify that the temperature of the environment where the system is installed is compatible with the
temperature operating parameters indicated on the product label and/or in the technical data.
5.2 Edge Sensor selection
There are a number of factors that must be addressed when selecting a sensing edge's length, profile and
mounting channel. These include, but are not limited to:
(a) Safety standard and category/performance level required of system.
(b) Speed and stopping over-travel of a machine's prime movement.
(c) Responsiveness of the supervising control system (time from actuation to inhibition of machine movement).
(d) Environmental conditions of process (temperature, chemical properties, spray/spatter profile).
(e) Proper training of persons associated with operation.
(f) Ability of the process to stop hazardous motion in a control reliable method according to determined SIL.
