TROUBLESHOOTING
If the switch as been configured to advertise a
voice VLAN, confirm the phone has configured
itself by pressing **85# to hear/see the VLAN ID
of the phone . If it is incorrect check your switch
configuration . If it is correct, but the phone is not
connecting then LLDP is not the issue, but IP
connectivity . Check DHCP configuration .
4.2 802.1x—Tech Notes
WHAT IS 802.1X?
802 .1x is an access control method for network
devices . It helps protect the network from
unauthorized devices connnecting to the network
by first requiring them to authenticate . There
are several methods that the 802 .1x standard
supports to authenticate; however, our phones
only support md5 authentication .
PROCESS
The supplicant (Cetis phone) connects to the
authenticator (POE switch) which challenges the
supplicant for credentials . Once these credentials
are acquired the authenticator sends them to the
authentication server . The authentication server
can then sends a success or failure message to
the authenticator . Once the authenticator gets
this response it either blocks the port or lets
the device on the network . Afterwards VLAN
configuration can be performed to place the
phone on the right VLAN . This can be done by the
switch, static phone configuration, or LLDP-MED .
HOW IS IT SET-UP?
Before 802 .1x can be made to work, the
authenticator (switch) and authentication server
settings must be correct . Configuration of our
phones to support 802 .1x is very simple:
1 . Log into phone's webUI .
2 . Go to Network Settings > WAN Settings .

3 . Under 802 .1X Settings
a . Enable 802 .1x .
b . Fill in User Name .
c . Fill in Password .
4 . Apply settings at bottom .
5 . Press reboot prompt and/or unplug phone
and plug it into 802 .1x switch .
4.3 DHCP Options—Tech Notes
WHAT ARE DHCP OPTIONS?
DHCP is known for IP address configuration;
however, it can configure much more via options .
These options can tell the endpoint provisioning
servers, VLAN info, DNS info, etc .
Endpoints send the options they support when
they make a DHCP request, and the DHCP server
responds with the correct information (if it is
configured on the DHCP server) .
OPTIONS SUPPORTED
Cetis phones support many options that make
configuration more easily done .
Option 60/43—This is a vendor specific option .
The Cetis phone sends option 60 containing
a vendor class identifier . The DHCP server
responds with option 43, which contains a string
with configuration parameters .
Option 66—Option that identifies the TFTP server .
Option 1, 3, 6, 12, 15, 28, 40, 41—Used to provide
common network information
Option 132—Vendor specified (common usage for
VLAN ID in VoIP) . Used to provide a VLAN ID to
the phone .
Option 133—Vendor-specified (common usage
for VLAN DSCP in VoIP) . Used to provide VLAN
QOS priority information to the phone (values
1-7) .
