Safety regulations
– When handling refrigerants compulsorily wear hand gloves. Avoid
skin contact with refrigerants. Protect hands against frost bite
(leaking R 134a evaporates at -26.5°C) and against leaching the skin
protective layer (refrigerants dissolve fatty substances). If the liquid
comes into contact with skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water
and see a doctor.
Warning!
– Possible danger of asphyxiation if refrigerants escape into the at-
mosphere. Refrigerants are heavier than air. Even at approx.
12 vol.-% in the air oxygen can become less for breathing and lead
to unconsciousness and impairment of cardiac circulation due to
stress and deficient oxygen. This can be fatal!
– Smoking is strictly forbidden when handling refrigerants. A live ciga-
rette can disintegrate the refrigerant giving rise to toxic substances.
– Before any welding and soldering operations on the air-conditioning
equipment the refrigerant must suctioned out and the residues blown
out with Nitrogen. The effect of heat results in disintegrated products
of the refrigerant which are not only hazardous to health, but can also
cause corrosion.
– Fire hazards are latent even with non-combustible refrigerants due to
ignition of oil residues and insulation material including oil mist as a
result of heavy leakages.

Handling the pressure containers

Warning!
– Secure the containers against toppling or rolling away.
– Do not throw containers. On crashing containers can become defor-
med so badly that they may burst open. Sudden evaporation and
spillage of refrigerant can unleash enormous forces. The same
applies to breaking of container valves. The containers may only be
transported with the protective cap securely fitted.
– Refrigerant containers should not be kept near heaters. Higher tem-
perature also means higher pressure that may exceed the limit per-
missible for the container. The ordinance on pressurized containers
indicates that containers should not be heated beyond 50 °C.
– Never heat up the refrigerant containers with a naked flame. Extre-
mely high temperatures can damage the material and cause disin-
tegration of the refrigerant.
– Fix a cap on empty containers to prevent moisture entering into
them.
– Never overfill the refrigerant containers as there can be enormous
pressure build-up in the event of a temperature rise.

Technical Rules Compressed Gas (TRG)

Guidelines applicable to vehicle manufacturers and workshops are
specified in the Technical Rules Compressed Gas (TRG). Personnel
dealing with maintenance and repairs for air-conditioning equipment
must be familiar with and adhere to these rules.
