bypass loop. At this point, the freshwater system
should be completely protected by antifreeze against
freezing to a degree indicated by the strength of the
solution placed in the supply tanks.
Note: New boats delivered in cold weather months
have their freshwater systems filled with antifreeze as
described above.
E. Marine Sanitation Devices
Completely pump out all holding tank waste and pour
in a cleansing, deodorizing solution. Allow this to sit
in the tank overnight, if possible. Then, completely
pump out and run the entire system. Check the
manufacturer's literature for the recommended type
of anti-freeze.
F. Engine / Generator
The engine owner's manual contains guidelines for
winterizing. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure
the engine's protection.
G. Fuel System
Shut OFF the fuel valve, and drain the fuel filter.
Clean the filter bowl and replace the fuel element
filter in the spring, before launching. This ensures
that residual fuel will not gum up and clog the fine
passages of the filter element. The fuel tanks should
be kept full for winter storage, with about 5%
expansion room at the top. Empty fuel tanks
encourage the formation of condensation. A biocide
and water absorber should be added to the fuel tanks
for winter storage.
H. Batteries
Clean battery terminals and cable ends thoroughly of
any corrosion with a baking soda and water solution,
and apply a light protective layer of anti-corrosion.
Batteries should be fully charged before storage, and
the fluid level maintained. Store batteries in a dry,
warm place (generally not on board the boat). Ideally,
the stored batteries should be connected to a
maintenance-type battery charger to maintain a full-
charge through the storage period.
I. Sea Valves
Open and drain all sea valves after the boat is hauled
and leave them open for winter storage. Inspect them
closely for mechanical damage.
J. Bilge
Completely pump the bilge of all water, and clean out
any debris present. Bilge pumps should be pumped
dry and hoses disconnected, if necessary, to ensure
that no water is left in the system.
K. Air Conditioning
Ensure condensate box and pans are dry and free of
water. Refer to accessories manual for any further
procedures required.
L. Covering the Boat
Cover the Back Cove 30 during storage to prevent
excessive weathering. Ventilation between the winter
cover and the boat is required in order to avoid the
buildup of excessive humidity. Failure to provide this
ventilation may allow moisture to penetrate the
gelcoat surface, causing discoloration and blistering.
Always ensure a good airflow.
