7.5 Sanitation and Bilge

A. Marine Sanitation Device (MSD)
The MSD on the Back Cove 30 is a fresh water,
electrically operated,
discharging into a holding tank with a deck pump-out.
(see Fig_6.4-1) An electric macerator pump is fitted
to allow overboard discharge of the holding tank (see
Fig_6.4-4), in appropriate locations.

There are serious penalties for improper use of
overboard discharge systems.
Federal, State and local agencies all may have
regulations covering
discharge in certain areas. It is the responsibility of
the operator to become aware of and comply with
these regulations. Generally, all inland waters and
coastal zones within three miles require the use of a
holding tank and locking-out or disabling the
overboard discharge system.
Do not discard paper towels, rags, matches, etc.
in the MSD, or clogging and damage to the unit
can result.
B. Holding Tank
Waste from the MSD is discharged directly to the
holding tank located on the port side of the engine
room, forward of water (port) tank. (see Fig_6.4-3)
This roto-molded tank is vented overboard through a
filter (see Fig_6.4-4) then a flush SS fitting, to port.
Note:
Holding tank filter should be replaced annually to
reduce potential odor.

A holding tank full level indicator is located in the
head. (see Fig_6.4-2) The holding tank should be
pumped out regularly, and must be pumped out when
the level indicator reads "FULL". Leaks in the waste
system could develop if the waste system continues
to be used after the "FULL" indicator goes on. Follow
the procedure specified by the operator of the
pumping station to pump out the holding tank. Be
sure to tightly screw in the waste fitting deck plate
when through.
The holding tank may also be emptied using the
macerator pump. This pump is operated from the DC
distribution panel, but the discharge sea valve must
be open prior to energizing the pump. (see Fig_6.4-9)
The discharge valve is located forward of the engine
and port of the inboard stringer.

Discharge of effluent is illegal in many bodies of
water. Know and understand all local, state, and
federal regulations surrounding your sanitary
system and its operation.
It's helpful to add a holding tank deodorant/treatment
to the holding tank. These treatments generally
reduce potentially offensive odors from the waste
system and promote the breakdown of waste. Don't
use any products that could damage the MSD, the
macerator or hoses.
