E. Stopping the Engine
Reduce engine speed to low idle and continue to
anchorage or into dock.
Shift the transmission to neutral and secure the
vessel.
Idle for at least five minutes to cool the engine.
To stop your Back Cove 30 engine, refer to the
instructions in the Engine Owner's Manual, found in
the accessory manual packet.
F. After Stopping the Engine
Fill the fuel tank to minimize possible water
condensation problems.
Drain the sea water systems if freezing temperatures
are expected.
Repair any leaks, breaks, or other damage in the
engine compartment, including tightening any loose
bolts.
Perform any periodic maintenance as directed in the
Engine Manual.
Clean the engine compartment of any spills, stains,
or loose debris.
G. Engine Condensation
Regardless of frequency of operation, it is never a
good idea to operate the engine for a short period of
time. Whenever the engine is used, it should be
allowed to run for at least fifteen (15) minutes after
warming to full operating temperature. Using the
engine for shorter periods does not allow it to
overcome normal condensation leading to internal
corrosion. Damage resulting from this misuse is not
covered in the engine warranty.
H. Engine Bed
The engine is fastened to aluminum angles which are
through bolted to the inboard side of the stringers.
The specialized rubber engine mounts (see Fig_6.1-
2) are designed to minimize vibration and noise
transfer to the hull while holding the engine rigidly
enough to achieve correct alignments.

Oil Change

Change the oil and other engine fluids according to
the recommendations in the engine owner's manual.
An oil changing system (optional) (see Fig_6.1-6) is
available on the Back Cove 30. For instructions on
this system refer to the instructions in the accessory
manual.
(Fig_6.1-6)
Please dispose of engine oil in a responsible manner.
Most marinas have provisions for the safe disposal of
this and other engine fluids.
DISCHARGE OF OIL PROHIBITED
The Federal Water Pollution Control Act prohibits
the discharge of oil or oily waste into or upon the
navigable waters of the United States or the
waters of the contiguous zone if such discharge
causes a film or sheen upon or a discoloration of
the surface of the water or causes a sludge or
emulsion beneath the surface of the water.
Violators are subject to a penalty of $5,000.
J. Conserving Fuel
Avoid fuel spillage. Fill fuel tank 90% full, never
overfill the tank. Fuel expands as it warms, and may
overflow from the fuel tank. Immediately repair all fuel
line leaks.
Use only recommended fuels with recommended
heat values as specified in the Engine Owner's
Manual.
Do not increase the fuel setting to obtain more power.
Do not set idle any higher than necessary. Unless
operating in extreme cold, shut down and restart the
engine rather than idle for extended periods.
Keep the air cleaner clean.
Operate with a good electrical system. A defective
cell in a battery can overwork the alternator,
consuming more engine power and fuel.
Make sure all belts are properly installed and
adjusted.
