7.1 Engine Hatch Lift System and Engine
Access
Your Back Cove 30 has been designed to provide
superb access to the engine room via a hinged
portion of the helm deck. In order to make the
opening and closing of the engine hatch as
convenient and safe as possible, an automatic lifting
mechanism has been engineered to operate the
hatch at the push of a button. It is important to note
that this system is designed to lift only the weight of
the hatch and a reasonable amount of owner's
stores.
Note:
Overloading the hatch may cause damage to the
lifting system.
Overloading, misuse or inattentive operation of
the hatch lift system could cause serious injury
or damage to your boat.
NO RIDERS!
Keep all persons clear of the hatch when the
lifting system is in operation. Do not walk on an
open hatch.
When RAISING the hatch, be aware of any items
that may interfere with the opening of the hatch.
The lifting system is powerful enough to damage
items during operation. When lowering the hatch,
remain watchful of any impediment to the hatch
operation make sure hatch area is clear before
lowering.
Keep all persons clear of the hatch while
lowering. Children should not be aboard during
operation of the hatch. Failure to keep clear of the
hatch could result in serious injury or death.

The control switch is located inboard of the starboard
side deck steps. Depress the "UP" part of the switch
to raise the hatch and the "DOWN" part of the switch
to lower it. The lifter operates on 12V DC power.
Verify that the DC panel is energized and that the
ENGINE HATCH breaker is "ON" at the DC panel.
The system is designed to operate slowly and safely,
but the safe operation of the hatch requires
attentiveness and awareness of the hazards.
When LOWERING, continue to hold down on the
switch until the ram is FULLY SEATED. This may
take a few seconds after the hatch has been lowered.
The fully seated position can be recognized by an
audible change in the sound of the motor.
Emergency and Secondary Access to Engine
Room
In the unlikely event of a complete electrical failure,
the hatch can be raised manually by lifting the aft end
of the hatch. Gas struts will assist with the lifting and
hold the hatch open.
7.2 Engine
The Engine Owner's Manual should be read
thoroughly.
The
instructions, technical specifications, maintenance
schedules, and information on replacement parts and
fluids. The engine has been engineered to run for
many years and will do so if proper attention is paid
to routine, preventive maintenance.
A. Before starting
The diesel engine should be checked before, after,
and during operation to assure proper working order.
Before the engine is started survey the engine
compartment to check for fuel or coolant leaks. Any
loose hardware or trash should be removed from the
compartment and any spills or stains should be wiped
up.
Measure the crankcase oil level as indicated in the
Engine Owner's Manual. Check the fluid level in the
transmission. Some transmissions require that the
engine be running for a proper fluid level check.
Refer to transmission owner's manual for specific
instructions.
Open the water intake sea valve and inspect raw
water strainer for blockage (see Fig_6.1-3).
