17.2 Open Gate sensor mode

In Open Gate sensor mode, the camera captures the largest available
area from the sensor, resulting in an aspect ratio of 1.55:1. The used
area is 28.17 x 18.13 mm in size, which translates to 3414 x 2198 sensor
photo sites and an image circle of 33.5 mm. The large image size can be
used e. g. for image repositioning, resizing, stabilizing or rotating, as
well as for native 3.4K VFX work or the best results when up-scaling to
4K.
To change the sensor mode:
1. In the System menu, select Sensor.
2. Select Sensor mode and select Open Gate.
3. Press the jogwheel to select Open Gate sensor mode.
LOAD
4. Press the
buttons simultaneously to load the new sensor
mode.
Loading the new sensor mode takes approximately 30 seconds
including a mandatory camera reboot. A progress bar indicates the
sensor mode loading progress.
Note: Switching between sensor modes always includes a factory reset.
Note: For cameras delivered before November 2013, a sensor calibration must
be performed by an ARRI Service Center before the Open Gate mode is
enabled. Most cameras delivered after November 2013 have this calibration
already included.
Frame rate
The maximum sensor frame rate in Open Gate is 75 fps.
Recording
Recording is only possible in ARRIRAW onto XR Capture Drives.
Monitoring
In Open Gate, the ALEXA records the largest possible image, hence
there is no additional surround view available. To help in framing, a
frame border can be switched on and off under
MONITORING>EVF>Frame lines + status info and MONITORING>MON
OUT>Frame lines + status info.
