MOWER MAINTENANCE

Engine Detail

Improper maintenance, use of nonconforming replacement
components, or the removal or modifi cation of the engine
may cause death or serious injury.
(Refer to fi g. 18)

Carburettor Adjustments

These adjustments should only be made by an authorised dealer.
Under no circumstances should the engine be adjusted to run at a
speed in excess of that shown on the Declaration of Conformity.

Oil Service

Check the oil level daily before starting the engine and ensure
that the correct oil level is maintained. Refer to 'Assembling the
Mower Before First Use' for oil checking and fi lling instructions.
Change the engine oil after the fi rst 5 hours of operation and
thereafter according to the 'Maintenance Schedule'.
Drain fuel by running the engine until the fuel tank is empty.
Remove the spark plug lead.
Allow the engine to cool.
Drain the oil while the engine is warm (not hot)
Tip the mower over on to its right hand side thus ensuring
that the air cleaner is kept uppermost to prevent engine

damage.
Remove the oil fi ller dipstick and drain the oil into a suitable
container.
Refi ll with new oil of the recommended SAE viscosity
grade. Refer to 'Assembling the Mower Before First Use'
(Refer to fi g. 19)

Air Cleaner Service

A dirty air fi lter will restrict the air fl ow to the carburettor,
reducing engine performance. If you operate the engine in
very dusty areas, clean the air fi lter more often than specifi ed
in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.
The air cleaner system uses a pleated fi lter.
Servicing instructions:
Open the cover (1).
Remove the fi lter (2).
To loosen debris, gently tap the fi lter on a hard surface.
Do not oil the cartridge.
Do not use petroleum solvents.
Do not use pressurised air.
If the fi lter is excessively dirty, replace with a new fi lter.
Install the fi lter (2).

Operating the engine without an air fi lter, or a damaged air
fi lter, will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine
wear. This type of damage is not covered by the limited
warranty.

Spark Plug Service

Use only Briggs & Stratton (Part number 19368) spark tester (1)
to check for a spark as shown in the diagram.

Replace the spark plug every 100 hours or every season,
whichever occurs fi rst. A spark plug wrench is available from
any authorised Briggs & Stratton service dealer.
Check the spark plug gap with a feeler gauge and set at 0.51 mm.
