Bearing Preload

This lathe is shipped from the factory with the
spindle bearing preload adjusted. If the spindle
ever develops a bit of end play and the workpiece
finish suffers, you can adjust the bearing pre-
load to remove the end play and improve the
workpiece finish.
Adjusting the bearing preload requires using a
spanner wrench or a punch and hammer. You
can either purchase the spanner wrench at a tool
store or fabricate one, using the diagram shown
in Figure 131.

To adjust the preload:
1.
Run lathe for 20 minutes on high speed to
bring lathe to normal temperature.
2.
DISCONNECT MACHINE FROM POWER!

Remove chuck (see Page 30), then shift spin-
dle to neutral by positioning spindle speed
range lever and headstock feed direction
lever in middle positions (see Figure 132).

4.
Remove end gear cover, then remove out-
board spindle cover (see Figure 133).

5.
Place chuck key in cam-lock socket and keep
spindle from rotating.
6.
Using a spanner wrench, or hammer and
punch, loosen outer spanner nut (see Figure
134) counterclockwise and remove it.
