MonitorType and screen modes
MonitorType and screen modes
MonitorType is a variable that controls which screen modes (see the RISC OS 3 User
and Applications Guide) your computer can display. The following types are defined:
MonitorType
*Modes 33-36 are not designed to be used on TVs, so do not adjust your set.
Note: For screen modes 0-15 on MonitorType 3, 4 and 5 the aspect ratio is
approximately 4:2 (these are known as letterbox modes).
Changing the MonitorType
This is set for you when you connect a monitor and switch on the computer (the
default Auto setting). Sometimes you need to change it, to make use of all the screen
modes available to your monitor.
For instance, the way some cables are wired may make the computer think that a
Multiscan monitor is a VGA monitor, so unless you change the MonitorType, screen
mode 24 (amongst others) won't be available.
For example, here's one way to change the MonitorType variable to 1:

For more information on this and other ways of setting the MonitorType, see the chapter
entitled Colours and screen modes in the RISC OS 3 User and Applications Guide.
Changing the screen mode
To change screen mode, click Menu over the Palette icon and choose one of the Modes
listed (or, type your chosen mode number at the bottom of the Mode box).
Using !Configure you can configure your computer so it always displays a
particular screen mode. See the RISC OS 3 User and Applications Guide.
