Embossing and Indenting Design

The CEM Embosser is the component of a card
production system that creates the raised
lettering and numbering on the front of most
financial or debit cards. Inside the embosser, you
find the embossing wheel and topping and
indent ribbon cartridges. The embossing wheel
can be purchased with up to 75 punch and die or
punch and anvil (indent) pairs. A second wheel
option allows for up to 75 additional punch and
die characters (indent is not available on the
second wheel). Features of the embossing wheel
that are determined at time of purchase include multiple font choices and a variety of special
characters.
The embossing wheel with indent characters allows you to produce characters that are pressed
into (indented) the front or back surface of the card. The most common use of indent characters
is to create the Bank Identification Number (BIN) and Card Security Code (CSC), sometimes called
the Card Verification Value (CVV), on financial credit and debit cards. Indent ribbon is available in
black or white. A special paneled ribbon (paneled black and white) also is available. The paneled
ribbon is designed to apply a four-character BIN in white on the front of the card and seven
characters (last four digits of the account number and three CVV characters) in black on the card
back.
The embosser can emboss up to five lines of text or numbers. Topping foil is then heat sealed to
the embossed characters. The foil is available in six colors.
