Batteries of different capacity/different design are
available for the Citan. They are located in the engine
compartment and are generally maintenance-free. The
following batteries are used depending on the vehicle
and market:
• L2: fluid-filled, 60 Ah/510 A EN (countries with
moderate/warm climate)
• L3: fluid-filled, 70 Ah/720 A EN (automatic or
manual transmission in cold countries)
• L3: VRLA, 70 Ah/760 A EN - a sealed lead-acid
battery (VRLA-AGM), whereby the electrolyte is
bound to a mat made of glass fiber (VRLA = Valve-
Regulated Lead Acid, AGM = Absorbent Glass Mat),
(all countries in combination with ECO start/stop)

The fuse box for various electrical devices is located
on the left below the instrument cluster. The fused
components are indicated by corresponding symbols.
Control systems
ESM (Energy Smart Management) is an intelligent
alternator management system which maintains the
on-board voltage constant irrespective of the driving
condition and prevents overvoltage. Controlling the
alternator also allows fuel to be saved. This system is
standard on the diesel engine with 81 kW and on the
gasoline engine and is also available as special equip-
ment on the lower-output diesel engines.

The high-quality batteries are designed to remain
start-capable even after extended idle periods:
• In cold countries, without ECO start/stop: 80 days
• In warm countries, without ECO start/stop: 70
days
• In cold and warm countries, with ECO start/stop:
80 days
• In storage: over 30 days
• Long-term storage: Service every two months

Interfaces for external data exchange
Two body manufacturer systems are available to allow
body manufacturers to easily modify the vehicle elec-
tronics:
• Body manufacturer interface. Wiring for
connecting a body manufacturer interface behind
the dashboard.
• Body manufacturer special module. The body
manufacturer special module allows the electronic
system of the vehicle to be accessed. The system
is not diagnosis-capable and is available for LHD
vehicles.
