After mutual logon, all participating PC stations of the subnet can communicate beyond the
subnets boundaries. In Simatic Shell, each PC station of a group is informed about the current
status of the other PC stations in the group.
When the status of a PC station changes, a message is sent to all stations, for example:
● When a PC station has archived a project
● When a PC station is shut down.
● When a PC station is started up and thus enters the group.
Adapting the firewall
A firewall can block communication between networks. In order for the PC stations to
communicate with each other beyond network boundaries, you need to adapt the local
Windows firewall to the firewall rules for the PC station. Enter the range with the IP addresses
of the PC stations from other networks or the entire IP range of the other networks as described
below:
1. Use the search box in the start menu to open the "Windows-Firewall".
The "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" dialog opens.
2. Under "Inbound Rules", select one by one all affected firewall rules, e.g. CCAgent, WinCC
ProjectManager.
3. In the "Scope" tab in the properties, add the IP addresses or IP scopes of the communication
partners to "Remote IP address".
Requirement
Make the following settings as an administrator.
Procedure
1. In the tree view of Windows Explorer, select the "SIMATIC Shell" folder on the PC station.
(Windows 10: "This PC" folder, "Devices and Drives" area)
2. Select the "Settings..." command from the shortcut menu.
The "Communication Settings" dialog opens.
3. Check the setting in the field "Multicast Life Time (TTL)".
The value gives the maximum number of transitions between various subnets (IP
parameters TTL).
4. In the "Multicast Proxy" area, the network address of the PC station of the other subnet in
the mask for the connection to the other subnet.

Number of PC stations that make a network-spanning connection
Only enter a "Multicast Proxy" for PC stations if they require cross-network communication.
● If higher availability is required, you can enter the network addresses of multiple PC
