Trouble
Excessive vibration.
Noisy Operation.
Motor Stalls.
Drill or tool heats up or
burns work.
Drill leads off.
Excessive drill runout
or wobble.
Work or fixture comes
loose or spins.
Probable Cause
Motor out of balance.
Improper quill adjustment.
Dry spindle.
Noisy motor
Overfeeding.
Dull drill bit.
Motor not running up to speed.
Excessive speed.
Dull tool.
Feed rate too slow.
Rotation of drill incorrect.
Failure to use cutting oil or coolant (on
steel).
No drill spot.
Cutting lips on drill off center.
Quill loose in head.
Bearing play.
Bent drill.
Bearing play.
Drill not seated properly in the chuck.
Failure to clamp work piece or work
holding device to table.
Remedy
Balance motor or replace.
Adjust quill.
Lubricate spindle. See the Lubrication
section.
Check motor bearings or for a loose
motor fan.
Reduce feed rate.
Sharpen drill bit.
Replace or repair motor. Check fuses in
all three legs on three phase motors
and replace, if necessary.
Reduce speed.
Sharpen tool or replace.
Increase feed enough to clear chips.
Reverse motor rotation.
Use cutting oil or coolant (on steel).
Center punch or center drill workpiece.
Re-grind drill.
Tighten quill.
Reseat or replace bearings.
Replace drill.
Reseat or replace bearings.
Loosen, reset, and tighten chuck.
Clamp work piece or work holding
device to the table surface.
