10.0 Troubleshooting JDPE-20EVS-PDF series Drill Presses

Symptom
Drill Press will not start.
Motor runs, but spindle
does not turn.
Drill does not come up
to speed, or stalls.
Excessive noise or
vibration while
operating.
Poorly drilled holes.
Motor overheating.
Table cannot be raised.
No speed readout.
Possible Cause
E-stop still engaged.
Disconnected from power.
Damaged power cord or plug.
Motor overheated, tripping thermal
relay.
Open wire in switch circuit.
Defective switch.
Broken drive belt(s).
Belts not tensioned.
Broken belt.
Open wire in switch circuit.
Defective switch.
Excessive feed rate for size of drill
and material being drilled. No
cutting fluid or improper cutting
fluid.
Insufficient power due to extension
cord
Worn drive belt.
Low current.
Base on uneven surface.
Belt not tensioned properly.
Faulty belt(s).
Dry spindle.
Loose spindle pulley.
Loose motor pulley.
Worn or damaged spindle
bearings.
Damaged splines.
Drill is dull, or improperly ground
Lack of rigidity in hold-down
method.
Speed too fast for material and drill
size.
Feed too fast for material and drill
size.
No or improper cutting fluid being
used.
Electrical circuit fault.
Oversize drill.
Excessive feed.
No cutting fluid, or wrong fluid.
Lack of lubrication.
Speed pickup out of adjustment or
failed.
Correction *
Release E-stop by rotating button clockwise.
Check plug connection. Check if branch circuit
breaker has been tripped, or fuse blown. Reset
breaker or replace fuse.
Replace cord and plug.
Allow motor to cool, then restart.
Repair open circuit.
Replace switch.
Replace drive belt(s).
Engage latch to tension belts.
Replace belt.
Repair open circuit.
Replace switch.
Reduce feed pressure or use correct cutting
fluid.
Replace with adequate size and length
cord. Optimally, locate machine near power
source.
Check condition of belt. Replace if glazed or
slipping on pulleys.
Contact a qualified electrician.
Adjust machine so that it rests evenly on floor.
Adjust belt tension.
Replace belts.
Lubricate spindle splines and quill.
Check tightness of retaining nut on pulley.
Tighten setscrews in pulley.
Replace bearings.
Replace spindle.
Sharpen drill. Check for proper angles and
reliefs. Regrind to proper geometry.
Check that all T-slot hold-downs and the table-
lock are tight.
Check spindle speed recommendations. Reduce
speed if necessary.
Reduce feed rate.
Use proper cutting fluid for material being drilled.
Check current draw in circuit. Make sure current
draw is the same as rating on motor plate.
Reduce drill size.
Reduce feed rate.
Use correct cutting fluid for the material and drill.
Make sure that rack, column and crank handle
worm gear are properly cleaned and lubricated.
Adjust gap between speed sensor and spindle
pulley bolts to approximately 1/16". If there is no
readout on the LED speed indicator after
adjusting the gap, replace the sensor.
