Smocking

The decorative stitch created by
stitching or embroidering over
gathers is called "smocking".
It is used to decorate the front
of blouses or cuffs. The
smocking stitch adds texture
and elasticity to fabric.
Use the standard presser foot
to sew basting lines 1cm (3/8
inch) apart, across the area to
be smocked.
Knot the threads along one
edge.
Pull the bobbin threads and
distribute the gathers evenly.
Secure the threads at the other
end.
Reduce the tension, if
necessary and sew decorative
pattern stitches between the
straight seams.
Pull out the basting.
