If
the
fluid level
check
is
made
w
ith the
vehicle on a frame
contact
type
hois t,
w
ith
the
axle hanging
free,
the fluid
level
sho uld
not
be
lower
than
the bo
ttom
of
the filler
plug
opening.
Confirmed
leakage
should
be repaired
as soon
as possible!
Brake and Power Steering Hoses
When performing other under-hood services,
inspect
s urface of
hoses
for evidence of
heat
and
mechanical damage. Hard
and
brittle
rubber,
cracking, checking,
tears
,
cuts, abrasio ns, and
excessive swelling indicate
deterioration
of
the rubber. Particular
attention
should
be paid
to
examining
th
ose hose s urfaces
nearest
to high
heat
sources,
such
as
th
e
exhaust manifold
.
Inspect
hose routing
to insure
hose does
not come
in
contact
w
ith
any hea
t
source
or
moving
component which will
cause
heat
damage
or
mechanical wear.
Inspect a
ll
hose connections
such as
clamps
and
couplings
to
make
su
re
they
are secure
and no
leaks are
present.
Note
:
In many
insta nces,
fluids
such
as
oil, power
steering
fluid,
and brake
fluid
are
used during
assembly
plant
operations
to
facilitate
the
assembly of
hoses to
couplings. Therefore, oil wet-
ness
at the h
ose-coupling area is
not necessarily an
indication of
leakage
.
Actual
dripping
of hot fluid when
sy!>tems
are
unde
r
pressure (during vehicle operation),
should
be
noted
before
hose
i!o replaced
based on
leakage.
Note:
Inspect hydraulic brake
hoses
for severe surface
cracking,
scuffing,
or worn spots.
Should
the fabric
casing
of the rubber
hose be
exposed
by
cracks or
abrasions
in
the
rubber hose cover,
the hose should be replaced immediately!
Eventual
deterioration
of
the hose
can
take place,
resulting
in possible brake failure
.
Brake System
The fluid
level in
the
master cylinder should be checked when
performing
under-h
ood service or
immediately
if
the brake
sys-
tem
warning
la
mp
indicates system fa ilure.
If
necessary,
add
fluid
to
bring
level to
the
bottom
of the
reservoir filler
holes
. With
disc brakes, fluid level can be expected to
fall
as the brake pads
wear. Only
brake
fluid
conforming
to DOT 3
should
be
used.
Mo
par Brake
Fluid
is a
fluid of
thi
s
quality
and is
recommended
to
provide best
brake
performance.
Use of a brake fluid that may
have a lower initial boiling
point,
such as
fluid identified as
70R1
or unidentified as to
specification,
may result in
s
udden brake
failure during hard
prolonged
braking.
Use only brake
fluid that
has been
in
a
tightly
closed container
to
avo
id
contamination
from foreig
n
matter
or moisture.
DO NOT ALLOW A
PETROLEUM-
BASE FLUID
TO
CON-
TAMINATE THE BRAKE FLUID
-
SEAL DAMAGE
WILL
RE-
SULT!
